Glossary

These three terms describe Taleb’s framing of uncertainty and exposure; they are not formal tail classes. Mathematical symbols remain in the shared notation canon.

Black Swan

An event that sits outside the usual expectation model, has large consequences, and is often made to look explainable after the fact. In this wiki the term is used for exposure and epistemic limits, not as a label for every surprising loss Taleb, 2020.

Extremistan

A domain where aggregate outcomes can be dominated by a small number of extreme observations, so tail behavior and scaling matter more than representative averages Taleb, 2020.

Mediocristan

A domain where individual observations are bounded enough that averages, dispersion measures, and thin-tail approximations can remain useful summaries for the aggregate Taleb, 2020.
